- In 1867, John Greene Webb moved his family from Utica, New York to establish a homestead on the shores of Little Sarasota Bay. They named the homestead, "Spanish Point."
- The family planted citrus, sugar cane, and vegetables. - The family built a packing house to prepare the citrus for the market. - The produce was then transported by schooner that Webb's sons Jack and Will, as well as his son-in-law, Frank Gubtill built. - In 1881, John Webb became a Postmaster and wanted a Post Office at Spanish Point.
- U.S. Postal services said they had to have a one word name, so he named it Osprey. - In 1885, Jack Webb built the first tourist resort in the area, Webb's Winter Resort. - Early 1900s, the Webb family started to sell some of the land. - Mary's Chapel- Built by the Webb family after a young girl who died while at the Winter Resort. - Pioneer Cemetery- all of the Webb family is buried in, except for Jack. |
